Everybody Knows (1988)

Everybody KnowsLeonard Cohen

Everybody Knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes, everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose, everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me, baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you’ve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes and everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes, everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes, everybody knows

And everybody knows that it’s now or never
Everybody knows that it’s me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah, when you’ve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe’s still pickin’ cotton
For your ribbons and bows and everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that it’s moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there’s gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose what everybody knows

And everybody knows that you’re in trouble
Everybody knows what you’ve been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it’s coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows and everybody knows

And everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes, everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes, oh, everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes, everybody knows
Everybody knows

Leonard Cohen is my favourite American (Canadian) singer. I love his songs and his poems, too. I think is better like a poet than like a singer. He is really a poet who sings poems. I’ve got all his songs and poems and some books about him.
He reminds me a great writer and poet, Charles Bukowski, an excellent anti-American outsider from Los Ageles.

Yes, of course. Here you are a Catalan talking English. It’s very interesting.

Once I heard someone say ‘hijo de hijo de wilem’ after singing the first stanza of the Dutch national anthem. First in Spanish and faster than the speed of light and Google translate in German. Not as fast as Willem though.
Most bewildering fact about this song is that it has only been the official anthem since May of 1932. Eventhough it is one of the oldest anthems in de world.
Was she ready to rewrite history? Abuela de madre de hijo!

    Who knows this?

Cohen came to Spain to receive the Prince of Asturias prize a few years ago.
This is a true story told by the poet, composer and singer.

He told how he learned to play the guitar. It was in Montreal. One day he went to see his mother and he heard a music he liked. A sad young Spanish flamenco guitarist was playing the instrument in a park. He asked him to teach him. And so it was. The Spanish did not speak English, only a little French. He hardly could teach him some chords, only six. The fourth day the guitarist did not attend his mother’s home where he gave him guitar lessons. In the cheap boarding house where he was staying he was told that he had committed suicide. What he learned was the basis on which the songwriter built the rest of his music. He never knew why he took his life.

The favorite Cohen’s poet is Lorca. Lorca is his daughter’s name and he always uses Spanish guitars.

II know another story about Cohen. He is a Jewish, but when he became old he was attracted by Buddhism. He retired to a monastery far from the world. Meanwhile, his manager stole him all his money. Fortunately, the monastery was in California, not in Tibet, and found out what had happened. So he returned to sing despite being an old man. He needed money.

His concerts had a great success and a lot of people bought his Cds and DVDs. He was going to sing in a city – I don’t remember his name- but became ill and an ambulance took him away. It was a pity. There were lots of people.

Here you are the 16 most popular songs – according to the tittle – of L.C. You can download it like a video or like mp3. If you don’t know how to do it, I can give you an explication if you wish.

I love his music and poems. A good guy.

PD. I think all these songs aren’t «the most popular ones», but they sound very well.

    Regí, Leonard Cohen fan.

This is a true treasure. All Cohen’s songs I think – 146 -, music and lyrics. There are also more singers and music: pop, rock, folk, classical…

    Enyoy it!
