In the Ghetto – Elvis
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
‘Cause if there’s one thing that she don’t need
It’s another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don’t you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day?
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads, and look the other way?
Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don’t get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers ‘round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
And as her young man dies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
It is a moving song. Elvis, the white man with the voice of a black man inside. I feel sorrow of his last days. Drugs, overweight … a pity, but a myth of the song for ever.
A wonderful song, a good day to you Mr Rexval.
Thank you, Mr Feseto.
Harry Chapin – Cat’s In The Cradle (1974)
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin’ ‘fore I knew it, and as he grew
He’d say «I’m gonna be like you dad
You know I’m gonna be like you»
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home dad?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
My son turned ten just the other day
He said, «Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let’s play
Can you teach me to throw», I said «Not today
I got a lot to do», he said, «That’s ok»
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, «I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m gonna be like him»
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
«Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?»
He shook his head and said with a smile
«What I’d really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?»
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
I’ve long since retired, my son’s moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, «I’d like to see you if you don’t mind»
He said, «I’d love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job’s a hassle and kids have the flu
But it’s sure nice talking to you, Dad
It’s been sure nice talking to you»
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He’d grown up just like me
My boy was just like me
And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin’ home son?
I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then son
You know we’ll have a good time then
A sad song has a way of digging down into your soul.
I remember when this Elvis song came out. I still like it.
Great hard hitting song from the legend Elvis. A song that makes you think.
Elvis reminds me not to use drugs. He should have slept with his Pricella more often and make a son that resembles her.
This song also reminds me of the afternoons after school, home alone making sandwiches or killing the last part of the home made apple pie and listen to his records. Or the afternoons my grandmother watching me closely, and terminate his tunes so I would make schoolwork. Until the good times ended. But that is a totally different song.
Poor Elvis, drugs and drinking really took a toll on himself. Priscilla still looks good today at 70.
